Atari 5200 Games Starting with St to Zz
Stargate was released in 1982 and bares no resemblance to the popular movie and TV show of the same name. In fact, it was the sequel to Defender. Stargate’s name was later changed to Defender II due to a copyright dispute in 1984. Stargate didn’t change the game formula that helped make the original game a hit. Instead Stargate expanded on the formula.
There is a wall of bricks along the top of the screen. Your goal is to destroy each one. Use the paddle to bounce the ball off each brick, destroying it. Miss the ball and one life is lost.
You are a chopper pilot on a surveillance mission in enemy territory. Your goal, make it through various obstacle courses alive and score points. Tall buildings, mountains, narrow tunnels and various enemies such as tanks, rockets and mines can all get in the way and destroy your chopper. The chopper is armed with a machine gun and bombs that can be used to destroy the enemy tanks and rockets. To make the task more difficult, your chopper has a limited amount of fuel.
Super Pac-Man did not perform very well as it played very differently from the rest of the family. As as result, it was never ported to any other platforms and was not considered a commercial success.
Tempest was a top arcade game and was subsequently ported to several game consoles and home computers and did well there too. Its featured a mix of fast addictive game-play and beautiful colour vector graphics.
The Dreadnaught Factor
The Zorban Dreadnaughts are huge space craft that are 140,000 feet long and weigh 970 megatons. These are the largest, most heavily armoured spaceships ever created. Unfortunately, these are not your ships, but are headed towards your home planet and your job is to stop them. The game is played from a side scrolling overhead point of view as your small but agile spaceship flies past the dreadnaughts.
Track and Field
Track and Field events include the following: 100 meter dash, Hammer throw, The long jump, 110 meter hurdles. The MSX version replaces the hurdles with a 400 meter dash. Getting to the next event requires qualification.
Your must pilot your spaceship to the City of Mystery that is located at the end of a heavily guarded tunnel. In the mountain zone or stripe zone, you may also come across an energy pod marked with an ‘E’. Fly through this marker and become invincible. Otherwise, use your ship’s lasers to help destroy enemies.
Wizard of Wor
You control a warrior who is trapped in a dungeon. Earn points by shooting the numerous enemy creatures which wander about the maze. The creatures wander about at different speeds and will shoot darts at you. Some will even disappear for a brief period. Use your radar to locate these invisible creatures. After completing a maze, be ready with the fire button to destroy a Worluk. He won’t always appear, but when he does, you will be awarded double points in the next dungeon if he is killed.
It’s kind of like breakout with the difference is that you must defend your blocks and shoot at a force that wants to destroy your blocks.
Xevious was a scrolling first-person shooter, and while a common game form today, was a new style of game play in 1982. Coupled with the graphics and game play, Xevious became very popular in arcades and was soon ported to all the popular game consoles and home computers of the time.
This prototype is simply a movement demo featuring the famous Beatles yellow submarine. Use the joystick to move your submarine around. There are no borders, no enemies and the sub will wrap around to the other side of the screen after a second or two.
Your goal is to defeat the Zaxxon defence system The game has three stages, first taking you through Asteroid City that is heavily protected by aircraft, guns and missiles. Stage two is a space shoot out against hordes of enemy aircraft. Those you failed to destroy in the first part of the task. Complete this and you reach the final battle with Zaxxon.
The goal of the game is to turn the entire maze green. This is done by connecting each section of the maze to the centre of the screen. After all sections of the maze have been connected, you can move on to the next, more challenging level.
Zone Ranger is similar to Asteroids. As the pilot of a spaceship, you must use your ship’s lasers to destroy large rocks, rogue satellites and boomerangs. Use the warp holes to be transported to another location. Occasionally, you will come across some sonic sparklers. These sparklers allow you to become invincible by touching them. Another oddity you may come across is a super portal. This portal transports you to the inner sanctum where bonus dots can be found.
