Another big hit of the 80s that has managed to find itself ported to modern game consoles. Essentially, gameplay is all about getting across the road. Avoid cars, trucks and other nasty things trying to kill you. Level-up by getting across the road, however, each successive level increases in difficulty. Like most games from the 1980s, levelling up usually meant playing the same boards with increased speed, more obstacles and smarter obstacles.
Frogger II: Three Deep
In Frogger II, you need to guide your frog to safety in three different locations. Starting out underwater, reach the top of the pond while avoiding dangerous alligators and fish (you can ride a turtle for safety!). Once on top of the pond, hop across logs, birds, and even a whale to the life preserver trailing behind a tugboat. In the third location you have to hop across a flock of birds to reach a cloud at the top of the screen. Each frog has a time limit to safely reach one of the homes on each of the three screens. You move on to the next level when a frog has safely reached each of the homes on all screens.
Galaxian is a shoot ’em up in which the player is at the bottom of the screen, with an arrangement of aliens at the top. The player moves left and right to aim at an alien, then shoots a bullet up the screen, and the alien it hits is killed. The aliens are classed as Drones, Emissaries, Hornets and Commanders, with those higher up the screen scoring more points when destroyed. At set intervals an enemy will move down the screen towards you, escorting a bomber, which is a moment of high danger. Clear a wave and another is generated.
Gauntlet is a fantasy-themed arcade game which can be played by one to four players simultaneously, which was highly unique for its day. Each player must chose a charter, each with a different gift and skill: Thor the Warrior, Merlin the Wizard, Thyra the Valkyrie or Questor the Elf. The Warrior is strongest in hand-to-hand combat, the Wizard has the strongest magic, the Valkyrie has the greatest armour and the Elf is the fastest in movement. Working together is essential to surviving the many levels.
Based on the movie, Ghostbusters. The player must monitor the map of New York City for ghost alarms and casual spirits, and plot a route to the alarmed area. You get to control the Ghostbuster vehicle as it drives through traffic and capture casual ghosts on the way. Once at the location take position and activate your proton beams and toss a trap to the ground. Manoeuvre the ghosts over the placed trap and activate the trap. Successful capture is critical as it will earn much needed cash that is used to purchase new Ghostbusters vehicles and new modifications for the vehicle.
Gremlins adapted from Steven Spielberg movie of the same name. The game takes place just after midnight when the Gremlins are running around Billy’s living room. You are Billy and your goal is to catch all of the Mogwai and return them to their cage and to destroy all of the Gremlins with a sword. Each level has a six minute time limit. However, as the levels progress gameplay becomes faster and the Gremlins and Mogwai more numerous. Advancing to the next level occurs when you have completed your tasks, or simply by surviving the six minutes. Bonus points are received for each Mogwai returned to the cage.
Your mission is to make your way through the dangerous mineshaft and locate the miners. This must be done before running out of energy and avoiding dangerous creatures and lava. Roderick Hero has some tools to aid in his mission. The prop pack will allow you to hover and fly around the mineshaft and avoid the many dangers. Your helmet features a short range microlaser beam which can be used to destroy the bats, spiders, snakes and other creatures you’ll encounter in the mines.

Hardball was a popular baseball action game designed mostly for home computers with the exception of the Sega Genesis. It supported all baseball rules and replicated the team structure for the National and American Leagues with actual team rosters. You can throw a variety of pitches from fast balls to curve balls, steal bases, select team members, and substitute players as the game is played.
Ikari Warriors II: VIctory Road
The sequel was just as popular as the original game, partially due to being released in the same year as the original game. The sequel is more of a space based game with your foes being rock-headed beasts, one-eyed green men and other odd creatures.
As a secret agent, you must stop the evil Professor Elvin Atombender who is tampering with national security computers. Penetrate Atombender’s stronghold and avoid his deadly robot creations. Don’t forget to acquire various pieces of a password to use in the main control room. The robots, rooms, and puzzle pieces will be switched around when starting over which provides replay value.

You have been marooned by your crew in the vast wasteland of the Egyptian Desert. The burning heat causes you to think you are a brave explorer of fortune but you have already been branded an Infidel.
A clone of Pac-Man, collect all points and escape the lethal heads. There are also magical points to break heads by your jaws. Collect all the point to proceed to the next level.
Jumpman is a bomb disposal expert that has been called on to save the Jupiter headquarters after Alienators invade it and booby-trap all 30 levels.
Jungle Hunt contains four unique adventure experiences that repeat with greater difficulty. Gameplay involves a lot of strategic jumping and knife play. In the first adventure you swing on the vines. The second adventure pits you against a whole bunch of nasty crocodiles in a mighty river. The third adventure you face oncoming boulders of varying sizes. The last adventure pits you against the dreaded cannibal that you fight to save Penelope.
In Karate Champ players compete against each other at nine different locations to determine who is the best. To win a match, you must win two out of three rounds by knocking down your opponent. A full point or half a point is awarded for knocking your opponent down and the first player to gain a two point lead wins the round. When the game ends on a timer, the person with the most points wins.
The evil Akuma has destroyed your homeland, killed your friends and kidnapped your Princess. You must fight your way to the palace with each opponent being more difficult than the previous. All the standard karate kicks and punches are available to both you and your foes in a realistic fashion. The game also featured many of cutscenes to develop the story.
You play Sir Graham, a brave knight who is sent on a quest to retrieve three treasures that were stolen by deception and stealth. You must take the following treasures back to the castle: a shield that protects its bearer from invaders, a mirror that foretells the future, and a treasure chest that is forever filled with gold. Once returned, ailing King Edward will hand over the crown. This is a text-based adventure game where commands are entered instead of performing actions. Some of the puzzles in the game rely on fairy tales so understanding these tales is essential to completing the game.
